M.E.M. IS JUST ME, SINGING, PLAYING, RECORDING, MIXING, MANIPULATING SOUNDS, SOUL SEARCHING – ALL AT THE SAME TIME. AS I JUGGLE AROUND, SONGS EVOLVE, ASKING QUESTIONS. WHO AM I IN THIS WORLD? WHAT GOOD CAN I DO? AND LIKE BRUCE LEE SAID, HOW CAN I EXPRESS MYSELF HONESTLY? FOR IF I’M NOT CHEATING ON MYSELF, I’M NOT CHEATING ON YOU.
I USE THREE INSTRUMENTS TO MAKE MUSIC – VOICE, ELECTRIC GUITAR, AND THE STUDIO. OCCASIONALLY, IF A SONG DEMANDS MORE RHYTHM, I INTRODUCE ALL KINDS OF KITCHENWARE, PILLOWS, SUITCASES… DID YOU KNOW THAT A CORNFLAKES BOX MAKES FOR A GOOD SHAKER? I DON’T LIKE TO USE SOUND LIBRARIES OR FACTORY LOOPS, ‘COS I WANT MY SELF TO BE IN ALL PARTS OF THE MUSIC.
I EARNED MY SPURS WORKING AS A SESSION SINGER, RECORDING ALBUMS WITH FAMOUS AND NOT SO FAMOUS ARTISTS MOSTLY FROM GERMANY, THE U.S. AND THE U.K. I SANG COMMERCIALS, TV AND RADIO JINGLES, COMPOSED FILM MUSIC, TEAMED UP WITH DANCERS AND ACTORS, PLAYED IN ROCK N ROLL BANDS. FOR A WHILE I HIRED OUT AS A TOILET CLEANER, TO GET A GRIP ON REALITY. WHEN I HEARD BRIAN ENO SAY THAT A LOT OF BEAUTIFUL THINGS JUST GROW OUT OF SHIT, I STARTED M.E.M. – MARIO KNAPP
